Maths

Mathematics is a foundation for understanding the world. At Brigg Primary School we want every child to develop the ability to reason mathematically, appreciate of the power of mathematics and have a sense of enjoyment and curiosity about the subject.

We wish for children to understand the importance of maths to support their future everyday life including the necessary understanding for their financial futures. As well as the subject’s interconnections across the world; critical to science, technology and engineering as well as a global language understood by all.

At Brigg Primary School we wish children to become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics, through varied and frequent practice with increasingly complex problems over time, so that children develop conceptual understanding and the ability to recall and apply knowledge rapidly and accurately. To develop the determination, self-belief and appropriate skills to reason mathematically; following a line of enquiry, understand and pursue relationships and generalisations, as well as use mathematical language to communicate their learning to others.

To become determine and effective problem solvers, applying their mathematics to a variety of problems with increasing sophistication, including breaking down problems into a series of simpler steps and persevering in seeking solutions; skills which will lay foundations for future success in life.
