At Brigg Primary School, the intention is that our children develop curiosity for music, which will engage and inspire them to reach their full potential, be determined and have ongoing self-belief. Our children will gain an understanding of what music is through listening, singing, playing, evaluating, analysing, and composing across a wide variety of historical periods, styles, traditions, and musical genres. We want our children to know the importance of all types of music, be creative and have respect for the role that music may wish to be expressed in any person’s life.

At Brigg Primary School, we teach music using our own adapted and personalised scheme on Charanga. This works over a two yearly cycle within each phase: Nursery and Reception, KS1, LKS2 and UKS2. The Charanga scheme meets all the requirements of the statutory National Curriculum for music, ensuring full coverage and enabling our children to receive all the learning that they require for the next stage in their educational journey. The learning within this scheme is based on listening and appraising, musical warm ups and activities, creating and exploring through improvisation or composition and performing these skills. 

The Charanga music scheme allows children to experience a new topic and style of music every half term. These lessons provide children with the opportunity to listen and respond to different styles of music, use their voices and instruments and have a go at improvising and composing their own piece of music. The lessons are planned to support a clear progression in knowledge, skills and vocabulary across the school. In addition to the Charanga music scheme, we also personalise the experiences of the children at our school by promoting cross-curricular links with other subjects, whilst also listening to a wide range of music from different historical periods, styles, traditions and genres through our ‘Music of the Day’. Our scheme also supports the learning and development of Christmas and end of year Productions as our annual performances.
